Here's the recording of our May journey circle where we explored the Green Man.

The Green Man is an embodiment of the Horned God. He appears carved in churches across the country, with abundant foliage around his face and shoots appearing through his nose, mouth, ears and eyes. But who is the Green Man? Why was he important to our ancestors? And what relevance does he have for us now in these modern times?

In this Circle, Jason gives a talk to answer these questions and more. He then leads a guided shamanic journey so you can meet with the Green Man and see for yourself who he is and what message he has for you.

19:28:56 From Ann Turner : chapel where there are over 100 Green Man carvnings 😃
19:29:06 From Fausta DiMascio : Interesting though to see the images in the acient world
19:29:09 From Michelle SaaRa : green Man reminds us we are part of nature and nature is part of us. we are reliant on each other
19:29:16 From Anna Rayner : Reminded me that there's a Green Man Trail in Beverley Minster
19:29:19 From Victoria : Love Rosslyn chapel
19:29:39 From Mark : Yes
19:29:41 From Ann Turner : Me too Victoria
19:30:51 From lesley gerrard : For me, the green man is the protector and a reminder that we too are nature.
19:32:54 From Sandy Holt : Think the energy or nature green man can be embodied into other beings…I was walking with a friend in a woodland I hadn't visited before and this man and his wife started talking to us. He was fascinating and telling us the history of the land. As he chatted his white beard and whiskers started to have a green tinge to them. I was fascinated and his stories of nature was so interesting. I mentioned it to my friend and she agreed he had the feel of the grren man energy about him. Sxx
19:32:55 From Melanie from Standish, Wigan To All Panelists : I’d never heard of Greenman, growing up in USA. First I’d heard of him was 2 Christmases ago when I first watched Worzel Gummidge. Have loved him as a representative of sacred, healthy masculinity, deeply rooted in nature ever since and I’m fascinated by the history and myth of Green Man. Jason, I think that you are a kind of modern representative of Green Man.
19:33:39 From Gill Dunkerley : fantastic story Sandy. Love it.
19:34:00 From Kim : what a lovely encounter
19:34:18 From Sandy Holt : It was magical x
19:34:39 From Ann Turner : O Sandy it sounds it. x Anny
19:34:39 From Michelle SaaRa : wow sandy
19:34:44 From Mandy Payne : So sorry, have to leave now, will catch the replay xx
19:34:52 From Alison Gaffney : I remember the BBC production of Robin the hooded man some years ago and Herne the Hunter, protector of the forest with his antler head dress was a powerful figure
19:35:14 From Fausta DiMascio : I loved that series Alison
19:35:26 From Ann Turner : Oh Alison I loved Herne in that series and yes, I always thought they were connected
19:35:37 From Katie Joanne : There is an immense sculpture of a green man in Birmingham. I'll post up a pic in the group after. xx
19:35:38 From Alison Gaffney : Me too💚🌳
19:35:58 From Melanie from Standish, Wigan To All Panelists : I see Green Man as benevolent, not at all malevolent - perhaps mischievous.
19:36:00 From Ann Turner : Oh yes please Katie
19:37:19 From Fausta DiMascio : were there celtic origins?
19:38:20 From alysonpowell : Not to forget that we had a very close relationship with the woods in the past, before we were thrown out of them by land owners. The Green man is for me the spirit of the woodlands, the trees and all the wisdom held in them that we have become cut off from. A guid and guardian.
19:38:47 From Victoria : I'm wondering if I had a dream with Pan in it. I woke up frightened but there was a horned small man in the house in which I grew up and he had left a crystal gift in my bedroom.
19:39:42 From Sandy Holt : Alysonpowell yes exactly xx
19:39:49 From Fausta DiMascio : Thank you - absolutely
19:39:55 From Tracey : it does - very interesting 🙂
19:40:13 From Fausta DiMascio : Woodland connection to all though
19:40:23 From Sandy Holt : Love the connection to the other beings thank you Jason
19:40:44 From Miranda : The Artists John Davey and Nikki Mestanek who introduced me to the Green Man always did totally separate images of Cernunnos and the Green Man. Their work always includes a Green Lady.
19:40:46 From Melanie from Standish, Wigan To All Panelists : Yes I thought of Puck too, except all grown up - older, wiser and more benevolent.
19:40:49 From Lucy McLeod : tee hee, and here was me coming along hoping to learn who the Green Man is...!!
19:40:55 From Michelle SaaRa : I love shamanic song
Horned god's of this land I call to you, I call to you
Pan, Herne cernonous
Pan, Herne, cernonous
Pan, Herne, cernonous
19:42:12 From Gill Dunkerley : I like the mystery of the Green man and how he can't quite be defined.
19:43:25 From alysonpowell : Yes Gill like the wind through the leaves.
19:44:16 From Ann Turner : At Fountains Abbey near Ripon, there is a Green Man carved outside a window, connected to the face of an 'Angel', on the inside...
19:45:07 From Rijusiddha : Good book on different horned gods: Horns of Power: Manifestations of the Horned Godby David Rankine and Huggens Kim
19:45:12 From Jill Robinson : Perhaps the church was less disconnected from nature then than it seems to be today.
19:45:13 From Gill Dunkerley : ooh love that Alyson :0)
19:45:16 From Alison Gaffney : Is there reference to the green man in alchemy?
19:45:46 From Michelle SaaRa : discernment is needed when connecting to these BEings
19:46:25 From jackie kersley : I’ve always felt that all the different images and names, green man, pan, herne, etc are all a tribe of woodland guardians, each woodland or forest having a member of the tribe as it’s protector and that is why there are so many images and names. I’ve thought this since I was a small child. Loving all the ideas and stories.
19:46:47 From Alison Gaffney : Re alchemy - the alchemical processes
19:47:42 From Gill Dunkerley : love the sensory idea. That resonates
19:48:47 From Michelle SaaRa : reminding us We and nature are connected and dependent on each other for All to thrive
19:49:01 From Miranda : Pugin's Church in Ramsgate has a beautiful carving of the Green Man over the Arched Entrance in the South.
19:49:10 From Anna Rayner : Maybe he reminds us that there is no separation between us and the rest of nature and all that is
19:50:09 From Emma Decent To All Panelists : Isn’t he a consort of the great goddess, especially in her spring maiden aspect. A connection with the Shellanagig also surely - carving of crone goddess opening her vulva - also a taboo image on churches going back centuries, and featuring in many places
19:50:20 From Rijusiddha : I saw the green man in the foliage when I was doing a day vigil in some ancient woods at Imbolc. The energy seemed to infer I am watching you, I am here and will watch over you if you come in good faith. It was brief but very striking
19:50:27 From Jill Robinson : Does the Green Man feature in the northern tradition?
19:50:54 From Katie Joanne : I took pictures of a Green Man carving in wood in a 12th Century church in Atherington, Devon xx
19:50:55 From Belinda, County Durham, UK : Have also heard someone suggest about the churches that perhaps having his image was an attempt to appease the Green Man himself so he would not cause them any bother... in those days the woodlands wouldn't have been far from many church boundaries. I can't help but feel that if it was maverick artisans their work might well have been swiftly removed or adjusted - church authorities were quite prescriptive and swift to destroy things that didn't fit with their narrative. At Durham Cathedral they found tonnes of exquisite early celtic cross stones that had been broken up and used as foundation rubble for a new chapterhouse, covered in foliage imagery, they're gorgeous but were deemed too pagan and too fancy so were simply thrown away
19:50:56 From Mark : Green Man is spirit of place maybe
19:50:59 From Fausta DiMascio : Maybe the revival is born of a need to connect to nature again and the way to do that is through the senses
19:51:02 From Victoria : We have a green man stone on our shed. I didn't know it when I bought it 25 years ago 🙂 Just loved it
19:51:44 From Miranda : My Book on the Green Man is by Mary Neasham
19:51:51 From Tiffani Lewsley : @belinda hat's such a shame 🙁
19:51:51 From Pauline ORMEROD : I have a green man carving at my front door.
19:51:52 From Sandy Holt : Maybe the fact that we have lost the reason behind the symbol of the green man is a reflection in where we are in society today. and the fact we are even discussing him is a shift back to a natural and a more environmentally friendly way of being...and this could restore the balance of earth again… I have a couple of green man faces in my garden - I talk to them as well as my trees - I feel they protect my trees. Sxx
19:52:08 From Miranda : The Spirit of the Green Man by Mary Neasham
19:52:09 From Mark : yes
19:52:23 From Fausta DiMascio : hence the link with Rosslyn
19:52:25 From Tiffani Lewsley : I love the green man, I find him soothing and lively simultaneously
19:52:30 From Mark : mhm
19:52:34 From Ann Turner :
19:54:01 From Anna Rayner : Awww lovely
19:54:03 From Rijusiddha : Love the poem Sometimes a Wild God by Thomas Hirons is sort of how I see him
19:54:08 From Mark : Aww ideal
19:54:10 From Katie Joanne : The Green Man is illustrated in The Book Of Kells as well... xx
19:54:10 From Ann Turner : Hurrah! 🥰
19:54:21 From Rijusiddha : Love it!
19:54:26 From Katrin Grisby : That’s lovely 🥰 x
19:54:28 From Annkat : 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
19:54:38 From Gill Dunkerley : fantastic moment -
19:54:41 From Sandy Holt : wow - green man doing his match making work it! ahhh the straw xxx
19:54:45 From Belinda, County Durham, UK : @Tiffani it is, although one of the upsides is that because they were buried, they weren't eroded by the elements so are in almost pristine condition having been protected by the earth for us to see their beauty today
19:54:47 From Michelle SaaRa : WonderFull story ❤️🌹❤️
19:54:55 From Daisy Douwes : I love that so much....😊
19:55:00 From Mark : True
19:55:12 From Belinda, County Durham, UK : That is so beautiful..!!💚
19:55:15 From Kyla : The Green Man always reminds me of a lion, both how his face structure is depicted as well as having a "mane" of leaves around him.
19:55:27 From Sophia Deane : 💜
19:55:33 From Tracey : You are a lovely couple!
19:56:03 From Alison Gaffney To All Panelists : There’s a lovely sense of mystery and ambiguity
19:56:08 From Anna Rayner : I wonder if it was a way for our ancestors to express their animistic beliefs about the spirit of the woods
19:58:28 From Belinda, County Durham, UK : Fausta and Sandy, love those thoughts💚🌳
19:58:36 From Alison Gaffney : There’s a sense of nature mystery and ambiguity - wonder if the Green Man is found in China and Japan - reminds me of Totoro ( animation by Studio Gibli)
19:58:56 From Katie Joanne : A Christian friend said that the foliage coming from the mouths of Green Men represents the life-giving breath of the Holy Spirit, although doesn't say she thinks it is to be the face of God. xx
19:59:12 From Rijusiddha : Have to go but enjoy your journeying. 🙏
19:59:13 From Heidi Cooper : My Husband loves carving the green man from wood that I have collected (with permission from the trees 💚), we have them hidden all around our garden to help look after it 🙏
19:59:16 From Belinda, County Durham, UK : Aaaahw Alison - I loved Totoro..!! and also Spirited Away... very magical
19:59:30 From Ann Turner : ooooh Heidi!
19:59:54 From Heidi Cooper To All Panelists : Ann 😄💚
20:00:04 From Lesley : Yes! Tom Bombadil
20:00:04 From Alison Gaffney : Yes Tom Bombadil!
20:00:12 From Heidi Cooper : Ann 😀💚
20:00:29 From Fausta DiMascio : Absolutely - miss him in the film - with you I loved him he stands out so much
20:00:42 From Sophia Deane : 💚
20:01:36 From Katie Joanne : Something to feel rather than think about, the Green Man mysteries... xx
20:01:48 From Ann Turner : I like that we don't have to know the answer to everything. It just IS. 🥰
20:02:44 From Katie Joanne : Yes @Ann xx
20:02:44 From Belinda, County Durham, UK : @Katie - have heard similar about the vine foliage on the celtic cross shafts, that they are a reference to parts of scripture that used nature as metaphors for spirituality
20:04:05 From Lesley : Tolkein also wrote a book about Bombadil. The Adventures of Tom Bombadil - haven't read it for years....
20:04:49 From Kim : oh really I've never found that have to look out for it 😍
20:06:15 From Jan : I have to sign out now , look forward to Journeying tomorrow
Thank you for such a Wonderful insight to the Green Man
Take care all
20:16:22 From Rachael Halliday To All Panelists : Is your mic on? Or are the whispers the green man?
20:32:42 From Kyla : I was feeling very uneasy and my raven guide in his human form held my hand and led me through the forest. At first a lion stepped out of the undergrowth before it slowly began to turn a green colour, with ferns growing out of its mane, it then shook its head and began to stand up, it's features becoming more humanoid. He didn't say anything at first, but I felt the anxiety and stress I was feeling begin to be pulled away from me. At first I resisted the feeling. I heard a whisper through the rustling trees coming from his direction which said. "Let go, let the Earth take it." When I did what he said, I felt tears fall from my eyes and I felt calm and at peace, as well as feeling a warm sensation around me like a warm blanket.
20:33:31 From Rachel H : yes was as if your mike was still on?
20:33:39 From Sandy Holt : I saw a face then a budgie or some kind of bird sqwaked loudly it sounded as if it was in the room and it made me jump back into this world…
20:33:59 From Tina To All Panelists : I don't think that happened
20:34:00 From jackie kersley To All Panelists : I kept hearing the squeaky sounds, bit distracting.
20:34:10 From Chris : Walk barefoot outside, listen to the messages of mother earth, she has messages for you/ everyone 'don't go back to sleep. Also heard the chant from 2019 space to emerge, Mother I feel you under my feet. Powerful journey
20:34:21 From Rachel H : still had a great journey - meet the green man and had a great sense of protection
20:34:23 From Lesley : Wow. We travelled to visit forests all over the world then span back and danced in the woods. Wonderful support from wolf and my bear. Green man said he appears in stone to speak for the trees.
20:34:25 From Colette : I was accompanied by Bull and the Green Man had blondeish hair and beard tinged with green. He held my hands and said ‘be still and life will come to you. Don’t worry I’m always here.’ I saw Adder and Glow worms too and felt supported and safe
20:34:36 From Tina To All Panelists : It sounded more like a bit of electronic interference, it was only brief
20:34:49 From Patsy Watten : I did hear some noises now & again, thought it was the cats 🙂
20:35:17 From Tracey : how many times on average do you need to practice journeying before you start to see things please? x
20:35:25 From Miranda : Thank you. I didn't so much journey as blend. I received a lot of healing. I felt oak leaves growing from my mouth nostrils, eyes and ears. The Green Man appeared very light and bright. i felt very Green and Pink. Pink light.
20:35:34 From Freda : Message from the green man - we all share the energies with everything. Don't forget !!
20:35:50 From Maryline Leese To All Panelists : I fell asleep! Right after I put my hand in the wolf’s fur. So no meeting with the green man for me today.
20:35:55 From Kim : it was nice to meet with Sheba again the White wolf that accompanies me on my journeys.she led me to a clearing with a green Man who was surrounded by animals a fawn and red squirrel I asked him how to connect to the trees and nature? and he said sit and listen. and I felt at peace and happy.
20:36:21 From Linda Monteith : I heard what sounded like a bird squawking but it didn’t spoil the journey x
20:36:31 From Tiffani Lewsley : I could faintly hear talking but it wasn't a problem. I met the Green Man after a while; he was very friendly and (blush) we actually had a kiss, he told me to seek him out again. He opened his hand to show me a spiders web weaved between his fingers with a beautiful sparkling black spider weaving it's pattern. It was lovely.
20:36:37 From lesley gerrard : My mind began to wander midway and soon as it did the green man's face leaned right into mine. It was massive, his nose the size of my head. As if to say, 'well, I'm here,, pay attention."
20:36:39 From Fausta DiMascio : The green man took my hands and took me to a clearing where we sat on the ground facing each other = wolf was with me – I felt calm and safe and leaves and flowers began to come out of the ground and enveloped me, I felt such an amazing connection. Various animals circled around us, deer, rabbits, badgers, foxes and a variety of birds. There were golden threads from me to all the animals. The green man spoke to me reminding me that this connection is always in me and I can always access and I needed to keep doing this to rest from my busy life. I didn’t want to come back.
20:37:17 From Rachael Halliday : Gosh that was incredibly intense. I felt like I could hear whispers and at one point wondered if it was Jason and Nicola & your papers. I was joined by a huge shire horse on my left immediately and he was sent by the green man, he took me to where I needed to go and I found as I was down on the ground my body was left there because I had to meet the green man with my energy. I was aware of fireflies which are my pathfinders and he laughed and said why are you asking when you know what to do, follow your path, you are supported by me and by all of nature. I heard a wren and then the horse poo’d - a rose immediately grew and flowered red for self love. I became the drum until called back.
20:37:20 From Red : The Green Man I met was twice human size. He was very reassuring.
20:37:30 From Richard Osborne : Green man told me to keep grounded and take on his fluid movements from the wind. he told me to honour him by planting tree seeds in autumn.
20:37:58 From Carolyn Mathews : I turned into a small being - a sprite or leprechaun, I danced, cartwheeled, ran around the woods. I hung upside down off the a branch from the top of a tree and jumped, somersaulting down. I felt the Green Man but need to visit it again to be able to meet him properly. thank you x
20:38:10 From Tracey : Thank you xx
20:39:14 From Gill Dunkerley : I got a sense that Green Man was just watching me. I was dancing freely round and round in circles. I felt he was saying You are not alone, but you must come forward. He was in the background. I just felt protected but also very free.
20:39:46 From ROSSLYNNE : yes, random nic
20:40:02 From ROSSLYNNE : sounds, v
20:40:32 From Alison Gaffney : Lovely to meet my wolf companion and explore the lush undergrowth - new life in the forest floor and shadow and light of trees and branches ... after a time there was a mysterious sense in the depth of the woodland a space for the Green man to emerge - eyes, deep eyes looking into mine, not intrusive but seeing me truly. I asked for help to reconnect with my wild spirit - he had a wooden carved cup with clear water for me to drink
20:40:39 From Rod & Diane : Green Man “I’m all around taking note”
A reference to those damaging trees “ they’re cutting their throats”
20:40:52 From ROSSLYNNE : voices, wondered if it was birds on guttering but think I was picking up the other mike as others did
20:41:13 From alexandra wild : The main message for me was to merge with all of nature, rather than be an observer.
20:41:27 From Kim : I didn't want to come back either fausta ❤️
20:41:41 From Sandy Beamson : The Green Man immediately welcomed me, wolf and horse. He asked me to sit in the leaves as he spent time stroking the horse then wolf. He asked to sit astride horse and wolf said to ask horse and to be gentle and not dominate. This was my message from The Green Man to share nature, to not dominate to be equal. The message came from deep within my own ancient connecting with my deep self which Green Man enabled. He thanked me for bringing animals to see him and asked for us to visit again. A beautiful visit.
20:41:59 From Marj To All Panelists : I was accompanied by a red fox as well as the wolf and we met a bear as well. In a clearing we met the Green Man and he invited us to dance and faded away saying he was meant to be hard to catch but he was always there
20:42:30 From Belinda, County Durham, UK : Everything went a bit blank having first stepped through the door into the lower world, but then suddenly I 'arrived' right in the middle of a pond in a clearing - suddenly surfacing through the water with a gasp, I was clothed but drenched in pondwater, with bits of pond weed stuck all over me, I could smell the pond water and wolf was waiting for me on the waters edge howling at me beckoning me back, then I sat with her in the sun, drying out and getting my bearings. After a short time a hand appeared to my right, green man standing next to me offering a hand to help me to my feet. He definitely had antlers in this form, and did have a very playful and charismatic energy. He led me on into the forest and we were almost flying through the trees, more of a 'peter pan' type energy darting around showing me around the forest. I drifted at this point and lost the journey a bit, although he reappeared towards the end and shouted after me as I was leaving - 'don't forget to try'
20:43:12 From Belinda, County Durham, UK : - not quite sure what he meant by that, but very much got the feeling this was a first introduction and an invitation to return again
20:43:24 From Sandy Beamson : He gave my horse healing
20:43:34 From Ann Turner : I didn't feel that it was the Green Man, but a spirit permeating all, not an actual person, as I'd imagined. I wondered if the carvings show a man's face to show the human connection with nature, as mentioned earlier. I've met a sort of Jack-In-The-Green character whose skin is green in other journeys but not what I would call a Green Man. I really felt I have just met the energy and spirit of Green Man, 'Guardian of The Green'.
20:44:01 From Julie : to much to say, so much happened! the most amazing bit was when I was given a drink from green man in human form. This liquid atomised my human form and I became the whole forest all at once on a cellular level. Green man protected me like a father figure, message being we are one and the same
20:45:00 From Rod & Diane : Green man was light, mischievous and gentle. Then he became huge with thick legs like tree trunks. I walked through them but each time I did I found myself in front of him again! Then foliage fell from him copiously and fell on me gently and held me like rose petals. I felt the message was to soften myself and allow and receive gentleness and lightness
20:46:31 From Sandy Holt : I can still hear a bird, interestingly yet there isn't one in the house …must look up bird I think its not coming from outside…
20:49:26 From Rachael Halliday : That thought came to me too Nicola, like he was erased and yet we’re now beginning to ‘remember’ / reconnect
20:49:34 From Sandy Holt : Gosh yes and maybe books about him were burned?
20:50:23 From Miranda : Robert Graves Book The White Goddess is not just about the Moon but also about the Tree Alphabet and in a sense the Spirits of the Trees.
20:51:05 From Kathy Labrum McVittie : I 'm intereted that many of the great civilisations suffered deforestation ... desertification
20:51:29 From Alison Gaffney : This deity is such a powerful aspect of the protective wild masculine along side Gaia - strong and compassionate not controlling and forcing life
20:51:42 From Mark : Celtic rebirth
20:51:58 From Fausta DiMascio : Difficult to control those who believe in a nature connection and have a sense of protection

20:53:58 From Ann Turner : Because Rosslyn Chapel was not destroyed in the reformation (it was used as a 'stable' at the time I think, they have so many Green Men carvings and so many carvings that are not usually found in churches. I believe that many carvings were used to tell stories , scriptures, warnings even, to the congregation, who were mostly unable to read, but could see images and have information from them.,
